In the wake of increasing new cases of COVID19, the Minister of the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, has directed all Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and Resident City Commissioners (RCCs) across the country, to increase sensitization of the masses through the media.
She has further asked them to inspect all public places and ensure that guidelines on COVID19 are adhered to.
“Following the escalation in numbers of COVID19 Omicron cases, you are hereby directed to undertake massive radio sensitizations and to inspect public places to ensure that the SOPs are being observed,” writes Babalanda.
The directive which also applies to deputies of RCCs and RDCs takes effect from today Wednesday, according to the Minister.
Uganda has in the recent couple of days witnessed a sharp rise in the new daily cases recorded, with the latest on December 27 being 1,272 bringing the daily test positivity rate to 18.3%.
Most of the new cases are alerts and contacts from Kampala and Wakiso districts.
The directive comes at a time when Ugandans are anticipating for a full reopening of the economy next month as promised by President Yoweri Museveni in October.
“Be informed that the schools will be opened in January and the rest of the economy will be opened in the same month,” Museveni said.
The President who noted that “vaccination is key to the reopening of the economy”, revealed that by the end of this month, the country would have received 23 million COVID19 doses and 12 million people should have been vaccinated including vulnerable people and health and education workers.
According to the Ministry of Health, Uganda has so far administered 11,377, 067 doses of COVID vaccine.
On Monday, the President received the status report on COVID19 from the national taskforce for a final decision on full reopening of the economy. He will address the country on Friday about the same.
