The Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda says gunmen on Thursday attacked security personnel in Jinja, Eastern Uganda.

Without providing further details, Babalanda used her Twitter account to describe the attack as cowardly and bloody.

“I strongly condemn the bloody attack on innocent cops on duty in Jinja this evening. These cowardly acts of terror will be defeated like all others. Let’s be vigilant and report bad elements,” Babalanda wrote on Twitter on Thursday evening.

The dependable Plus News has separately learnt that the attack occurred on Thursday evening at the entry of Gaddafi Barracks in Jinja where yet to be identified gunmen attacked a UPDF soldier manning the entry point.

The attackers shot him dead before fleeing with his gun and another belonging to his colleague who had left it with him as he stepped away to buy what to eat when the attack happened.

The attack is the third on security in a period of one and half months. A couple of days ago, gunmen attacked Kensington police post in the affluent Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.

They fired two rounds shattering the window panes of the police post. No any injury or death in the shooting because officers were alert and they responded well by chasing them, according to Police.

A month earlier, gunmen attacked Busiika police station in Luwero district and killed two police officers, injured two others, and made off with two firearms. One of the injured officers later succumbed to the gunshot wounds.

Security has since blamed the attack on Uganda Forces for Coalition Change, a rebel outfit.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said that they have enhanced security at all police posts and stations around Kampala as well as pump fuel stations.

The incident also comes against the recent decision by the police leadership to merge several police posts around Kampala, Ssezibwa, and Katonga regions as the force pilots a new policing model which will be based at the sub-county.
