Learners in boarding schools in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono districts will report to schools in a staggered manner starting January 10, according to the plan released Monday by the Ministry of Education and sports.

This is in respect with President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to the Ministry to come up with a detailed plan on the reopening of Schools this month in a way that would prevent and mitigate further spread of COVID19. The plan is also intended to reduce traffic congestion involved as learners return to school.

Now according to the released plan, schools in Mpigi and Wakiso will open on January 10 to A-level and lower primary learners in Boarding section. On Wednesday January 12, boarding students in O-level and upper primary will also open.

For Kampala and Mukono, boarding students in A-level and lower primary start on Tuesday January 11 and their colleagues in O-level and upper primary start on Thursday January 12.

The Ministry says the plan also applies to Students in International Schools whether offering Day or Boarding School.

Parents and guardians have also been tasked to ensure that the
learners have masks to wear when travelling to school while using public transport means.

Schools were among the public places which government suspected in March this 2020 to curb the spread of the virus in thr County. They have been fully or partly closed for nearly 20 months and with more than 10 million primary and secondary school students at home.

A report released in August by the National Planning Authority, a government agency, found that “30 percent of the learners are likely not to return to school forever” and that 3,507 primary and 832 secondary schools in the country were likely to close.
