A law student at the Mukono based Uganda Christian University (UCU) identified as Bewatte Bentunguura has Thursday evening reportedly been stabbed to death at Makerere University.

Betunguura was at Makerere University to solicit support for his friend Justus Tukamushaba a candidate for the opposition political party in the guild elections.

Makerere University guild elections were for tomorrow July 15 from which students were expected to choose one guild President out of the 16 candidates in the guild race to represent them as their new 88th Guild President replacing the outgoing Shamim Nambassa.

It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed in a scuffle between students supporting a candidate of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) and the FDC which ensued on the last day of campaigns.

Police is yet to comment the incident.

Meanwhile, following the deadly incident, the University Council has suspended the guild elections tomorrow as well as the entire guild leadership until further notice.

“The ongoing elections for the 88th Makerere University Students Guild leadership are suspended indefinitely,” reads a letter by the Chairperson of the Council in part.

“The Makerere University Students Guild is suspended with immediate effect. This suspension includes the Guild Care Taker Government and the Students Common Room”

“Management shall investigate all cases of violence in the electoral campaigns for the 88th Students Guild leadership and report to the Council for appropriate action,” adds the letter.

She also revealed that the Council will convene in an emergency meeting on Friday 15th July 2022 to consider further actions to address student indiscipline and violence at the University.
