President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed sadness following the death of former President Kenya Emilio Stanley Mwai Kibaki.
In a message shared by the Presidential Press Unit, Museveni said Kibaki has been a transformational leader who loved his country Kenya and Africa.
“This afternoon, I have received sad news, announcing the death of H.E. Emilio Mwai Kibaki… This is a sorrowful moment for the people of Kenya, the East African Community and the African Continent. I extend, on behalf of the people of Uganda, heartfelt sympathies to the family of the late President, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya and all Kenyans, upon the loss of a great Statesman,” Museveni’s message reads in part.
Museveni described Kibaki as a true Pan-Africanist who played a fundamental role in achieving socio-economic transformation and prosperity for the Kenyan people. “While at the helm of Kenya’s leadership, he played a fundamental role in achieving socio-economic transformation and prosperity for Kenyan people. He was active in deepening the roots of African unity and cooperation for peace, development and security. As he rests from his earthly responsibilities, let the young generation study his exemplary deeds and emulate this Great Son of Africa,” said Museveni.
President Kenyatta announced the passing of Kibaki 90 who has been suffering ill health this afternoon. In honor of his duties to Kenya, Kenyatta ordered all flags to fly at half-mast throughout Kenya until the fallen leader is buried.
Kibaki was elected President of Kenya in 2002 replacing Daniel Arap Moi who had ruled Kenya with an iron fist. With Kibaki’s death, Kenya doesn’t have any former president until later this year when Uhuru retires having served the mandatory two five-year term.
Currently the presidential hopefuls are crisscrossing the country appealing to Kenyans to choose one of them as the fifth President since independence. Stiff competition is between former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.
