Uganda Premier League players will today afternoon honour Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje who will be playing his last competitive match for his club Police FC.
SC Vipers will host Police FC in one of the last matches of the 2021/2022 Star Times Uganda Premier League at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
FUFA confirmed in a statement that the retiring Cranes midfielder will be honoured during his last League match. FUFA revealed that the match official will temporarily stop the game in the 6th minute and consequently, players and fans will honour Mawejje with a standing ovation. The referee will temporarily stop the match in the 6th minute which was derived from Mawejje’s number 6 shirt number.
“FUFA confirms that the star will be accorded a standing ovation when the 6th minute between Vipers SC and Police FC clocks at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende on Saturday,” FUFA said in a statement.
Adding that; “In the 6th minute, the referee will temporarily stop the game to accord a standing ovation by all players and fans to the Police FC Captain Mawejje who is retiring from competitive football. Play will resume thereafter.”
Earlier this week, Mawejje announced that he will be retiring from active football after spending close to 15 years representing Uganda Cranes. He told our reporter that he will later play two testimonial matches in Kampala and Masaka.
“On Saturday am playing the last game of my career. After I will play two testimonial games, one in September at the KCCA ground in Lugogo, and the second one will be in Masaka where my journey started,” Mawejje told our reporter.
Mawejje was part of the historical squad that played in the 2017 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON in Egypt. The Cranes had last featured in AFCON in 1978 before making a return in 2017. During his stay on the national team, Mawejje completed 83 caps where he scored eight goals, making him one of the most capped national team players.
During the same match at Kitende, SC Vipers will be crowned the 2021/2022 Champions. They were declared champions two weeks ago.
