Police have shot dead a man suspected to have stolen a car belonging to Tinah, one of the foreign journalists working in Uganda.

Tinah on Thursday reported the matter at Central Police Station as well as alerting the public on different socials.

“Dear all. My car has been stolen and my camera trypod was in it. If anyone sees a secind hand manfrotto tripod being sold please let me know. Thanks also if you see UAQ 571B Rav 4 inform the police,” posted the Journalist on different social media platforms.

Now, on Friday evening, ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed that a one Lawrence Amoti, succumbed to bullet wounds after being shot by police officers during an intelligence-led operation at Gganda village in Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district.

The incident happened on Friday at about 2pm during the operation.

“The Journalist reported the incident to Central Police Station and an investigation was instituted immediately that our officers from flying squad were able to extract footage from the nearby CCTV cameras,” says ASP Owoyesigire.

“They were able to identify the suspect as as one Busingye Lawrence Amoti Alias Mutooro, who was found to be a notorious robber that has been engaging in activities of theft of motor vehicles and has on several occasions been arrested and released on bail by courts of law.”

“He was pursued by the task team from Flying Squad Unit until today in Gganda where bullets were fired and unfortunately one wounded him. He later succumbed to bullet injuries at the scene,” adds Owoyesigire.

The deceased’s body has since been conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for postmortem.

The vehicle suspected to have been stolen by Mutooro was also recovered at the crime scene in Gganda, Nansana.
