The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) says its helicopter which was forced to emergency land in Fort Portal on Saturday morning, developed a technical fault.

“This morning our Mi 24 helicopter developed a mechanical fault while in flight and the pilot made an emergency landing,” says the country’s army on Twitter.

“Fortunately no casualties both to the occupants of the plane and on the ground,” adds UPDF.

Photos of the aircraft circulating on social media, shows that the MI-24 helicopter landed into a mud and wattle house in what appears like a banana plantation at Saaka airfield.

According to an eyewitness, three helicopters had just taken off from Saaka airfield but one of them crashed into the house.

The eyewitness says that the occupant of the house who is an elderly woman only identified as Peruth was rushed to hospital.

Other witnesses said that two UPDF soldiers were seen disembarking from the helicopter.

UPDF soldiers have cordoned off the scene of the crash to prevent on-lookers from getting to it.
