Makerere university students with disabilities, through a mentorship training organized by the Ministry of PWD’s were equipped with life practical skills to enable them start up projects that will help them survive.
The training that began on Saturday 5th March, 2022 and ended on Saturday 19th March, 2022 leaving the lives of these students transformed.
Miriam Najjingo, the 87th minister of persons with disabilities believes such initiatives will open the eyes of special needs students to realize that ‘disability is not inability’.
Doreen Nyanjura, the Kampala Capital City Authority deputy lord mayor who attended the 19th March training held at the central teaching facility auditorium called upon society to aid in the effort of bettering the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
“Let us all continue doing the best we can to contribute in the effort of creating a better life for people with disabilities. Not just in Makerere but across our entire country,” Nyanjura said.
A number of initiatives have been put in place to help disabled students fight stigma and live a normal life. For instance, the government of Uganda introduced a disability scheme in public higher institutions of learning to help the students with disabilities finish their education.
Such initiatives are intended to help these differently challenged students live a normal life and strive to achieve their dreams.
