Uganda and Algeria have committed to further enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

This was reached on Thursday during a meeting between Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba and Algeria’s new Ambassador to Uganda, H.E Oualid Cherif.

Oualid was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Republic of Uganda in December last year.

Muliimba who welcomed the new Ambassador to Uganda, hailed the historical bilateral relations that exist between the two countries.

In their discussions, both dignitaries committed to further enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest including Economic and Political Affairs through a Joint Permanent Commission between the two countries.

Both countries which attained their independence the same year enjoy excellent relations, and they are strategic partners in various ways.

At the African level, Algeria and Uganda are partners in solidarity who work together, and with other partners in order to defend the interests of our continent and deepen the process of African Integration and the construction of an African architecture of peace and security.

Algeria continues to give its traditional support to the human training resource in Uganda. Hence the scholarship quota that Algeria offers to Uganda has trippled in recent years.

At the economic and commercial level, contacts between the business communities of the two countries have been initiated in order to give more substance to the overall bilateral relations. The twinning at the finalization stage of the two Chambers of Commerce and a possible putting in place of a Council of businessmen will help make this approach a reality.
